World Whale Day

Every Third Sunday in February / February 15, 2026

This holiday was born in Hawaii in 1980, in the city of Lahaina on the island of Maui. It was founded by the non-profit organization Pacific Whale Foundation, which was concerned about the fate of humpback whales that migrate to the Hawaiian Islands every winter for breeding.

Initially, the holiday was intended as a local event — the "Whale Day" festival — to raise awareness about the need to protect humpback whales. Over time, the initiative spread globally and became an international celebration held on the third Sunday of February.

Today, World Whale Day has become a symbol of the global movement for whale protection and recognition of their vital role in marine ecosystems.

Goals

Main Goals and Objectives
This day focuses on whales as incredible creatures that play a key role in marine ecosystems.

The main goal is to develop an emotional connection between humans and whales through art, culture, and science. The holiday aims to showcase the grandeur of these animals, their intelligence, social bonds, and cultural significance to different peoples around the world.

Special attention is given to educational programs that talk about different whale species, their behavior, and the importance of their protection.

How to Participate

No matter where you are located, you can organize creative events dedicated to whales: photo exhibitions, children's drawing contests, or screenings of documentary films.

In coastal regions, you can participate in whale-watching programs (whale watching) while following all the safety rules.

You can also organize musical evenings featuring whale song recordings or hold workshops to create art objects from eco-friendly materials.

An important aspect is supporting scientific research: you can join citizen science programs for whale tracking or support research projects.
