World Oceans Day: Awakening New Depths

The ocean is the source of life for humanity and all living beings on Earth. Yet, despite our complete dependence on it, we have explored only about 10% of its vast expanse. While our understanding of the ocean's grandeur is limited, we know for certain that the consequences of our actions reach its most remote depths. Our efforts so far have had only a minimal impact, and it is urgent that we change our relationship with the ocean. To attract more resources for its protection, we must awaken new depths.

In celebration of World Oceans Day, the United Nations is joining forces with decision-makers, scientists, private sector leaders, civil society representatives, indigenous peoples, celebrities, and youth activists to highlight that Earth is much more than we can imagine and to make ocean protection a top priority.

History

Brief History of World Oceans Day
1
1992
Declaration of Oceans Day
World Oceans Day was first declared on June 8, 1992, in Rio de Janeiro at the Global Forum, a parallel event during the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The event offered non-government organizations (NGOs) and civil society a platform to share their views on environmental issues. The Declaration was inspired by an event organized by the Oceans Institute of Canada and supported by the Canadian Government: “Oceans Day at Global Forum – The Blue Planet.” The program featured international experts, leaders, and advocates for the oceans’ role in sustaining the Blue Planet.
2
2008
UN Designation of World Oceans Day
In 2008, under Canada's leadership, the UN General Assembly designated June 8 as "World Oceans Day" (Resolution 63/111). The observation of Oceans Day expanded to address various global concerns, including maritime space, international shipping, marine biodiversity, sustainable development, and climate change. These areas were central to the awareness and actions sparked by World Oceans Day.

2017
United Nations Ocean Conference & World Oceans Day
The 2008 Declaration of World Oceans Day inspired global action. Twenty-five years after the first Oceans Day in Rio, a special event on June 8 marked the occasion at the UN Ocean Conference (June 5-9, 2017). The conference focused on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14: conserving and sustainably using oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development.
