Natural Spectacles and Environmental Challenges
July 2025 will go down in history as a month of contrasting events in the dolphin world. On one hand, residents and tourists in Anapa witnessed amazing natural shows, while on the other, catastrophic consequences of December's environmental disaster in the Kerch Strait continue to unfold.
Dolphin Performances in Anapa
In early June, eight dolphins staged an impromptu performance off the coast of Anapa, jumping and playing tag to the delight of hundreds of spectators. Four individuals stayed near the shore for two hours, demonstrating acrobatic tricks. Marine biologists attribute the increased dolphin activity to abnormally warm weather following a cold spring.
Bloggers captured a similar show on June 8 near Pionersky Prospect, where dolphins actively hunted and leaped from the water, creating an unforgettable spectacle for vacationers.
Tragic Consequences of Oil Spills
However, not all dolphin news in July was joyful. A dead newborn dolphin was discovered on Matsesta beach in Sochi, washed ashore by a storm. Tourists reported traces of oil on the shore, though local authorities denied large-scale pollution.
Since December 2024, following the tanker crashes in the Kerch Strait, at least 84 dolphins have died. In June, weakened individuals continued to wash ashore, particularly in the areas of Gelendzhik, Anapa, and Novorossiysk.
Aggressive Dolphin Behavior in Britain
International news also brought troubling reports. In early July, a bottlenose dolphin nicknamed Anakin killed a dolphin calf and a dogfish shark in Cardigan Bay, Wales. Its aggressive behavior, including throwing victims out of the water, puzzled researchers and caused concern among marine biologists.
Legal Consequences of Environmental Catastrophe
Rosprirodnadzor filed lawsuits totaling 85 billion rubles against the owners of the sunken tankers for the deaths of thousands of dolphins and birds. Oil spills continue to threaten the Black Sea ecosystem, especially with rising water temperatures during the summer period.
Astronomical Observations
On a more positive note, astronomers recommended observing the Delphinus constellation in July, associated with ancient myths. The stars Sualocin and Rotanev in this constellation are particularly noteworthy for stargazing enthusiasts.
July 2025 demonstrated the full complexity of human-nature relationships — from admiration for natural beauty to awareness of responsibility for the environmental consequences of our activities.
